    THE SULTAN OF OIL-RICH BRUNEI, SIR OMAR ALI SAIFUDDIN, YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) VISITED TEMBURONG, A TINY ENCLAVE JUTTING INTO MALAYSIAN SARAWAK TERRITORY. THE REASON: TO PRESENT CAMPAIGN MEDALS TO 200 PEOPLE FOR THEIR PART IN SUPPRESSING THE BRUNEI REBELLION IN DECEMBER 1962.

    TEMBURONG, THE MOST ISOLATED AREA IN BRUNEI, WAS THE SCENE OF FIERCE FIGHTING DURING THE REBELLION LED BY A.M. AZAHARI, WHO DEFECTED TO INDONESIA. SOON AFTER THE REBELLION WAS PUT DOWN BY BRITISH TROOPS, ABOUT 350 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED IN THE DISTRICT. MOST HAVE NOW BEEN RELEASED AFTER A SPELL AT A REHABILITATION CENTRE.

    OF THE 4,000 PEOPLE IN TEMBURONG, 1,400 ARE MALAYS AND THE REST ARE IBANS AND MURUTS. TEMBURONG IS THE MOST BACKWARD AREA AND HAS ONLY 650 HOUSES. THERE ARE FEW ROADS AND MOST OF THE AREA IS JUNGLE-CLAD HILLS.
