  • Description

The desolate 'dead heart' of Australia is being opened up for tourists.

A party of nine have recently crossed the rugged Simpson Desert -- a huge area of sand dunes and scrub, 700 miles north of Adelaide.

Travelling in two four-wheel drive vehicles, the party covered 270 miles of the Simpson Desert between the small outback of Oodnadatta and Birdsville.

The tour operator, Mr. Rex Ellis, says he is receiving letters from people in many parts of the world interested in taking a look at the Australian outback.
