As the world waits in anticipation for a feast of world-record breaking performances at the Olympic Games next month, some people who have no hope of competing at such elevated levels, are turning their attention to earning a place in the record books by more modest means.

SYNOPSIS: In the Greek capital, Athens, on Saturday, a men's hairdresser, Christos Angelopoulos, set out to break the European record for hairdressing. The old record was held by an Italian, who had spent 83 hours plying his craft non-stop.

One of the main problems facing Mr. Angelopoulos in his record-breaking attempt, was to find enough heads of hair to cut. He solved the problem by placing a board outside his barter's shop advertising free hair-cuts, day or night.

Helped with some refreshments during his uninterrupted stint of clipping, he managed to keep going for almost four days. throughout the attempt he was watched by a committee of judges, which included journalists, an industrialist, and the President of the Athens Hairdressers Association.

They eventually confirmed his new record of 95 hours and some two hundred heads. A truly topping achievement!
