Background: World Cup soccer....and Brazil, in a few golden moments of their magical best, edged out Italy for third with a win by two goals to one on Saturday (24 June) in Buenos Aires. The two nations have won five of the last ten world cups between them and were bitterly disappointed not to reach this year's final after coming so close.
SYNOPSIS: Italy, playing left to right in the dark blue stripe, had been the outstanding team of the tournament's opening round. The Italians went on to attack early in the first half, but a shot from Antognoni hit the bar.
Italy had been upset after being thwarted at the last hurdle to the final by Holland. However they looked like earning third place in the tournament. After a drive down the right flank, the ball was crossed to Causio who headed the ball in for a goal, seven minutes from the interval.
Italy, the only team to have beaten host-nation Argentina, kept up the pressure. On this occasion following a scramble in the goal-mouth the ball came to Causio again and his shot hit the crossbar.
Minutes later the Italians came back with another attack down the right side. The ball got through to the young Italian striker, Rossi, who's shot also hit the wordwork.
In the second half the Brazilians found the form which had made them pre-World Cup joint-favourites. They pulled themselves back on level terms with Italy when ??? fed Nelinho on the right. Nelinho hit a brilliant swirling ball from a full 30 metres past the Italian keeper, Zoff.
Seven minutes later Rivelino, who came on as substitute, laid the ball off to Mendoca who passed to Dirceu and he scored Brazil's second goal.
The game was virtually sewn up for Brazil but Italy came back with one last effort through ???, only to be disappointed again. Final score Brazil 2, Italy 1.
