Background: Angela Davis, the negro militant and one of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's ten most wanted fugitives, was arrested last night (Tuesday) in a New York motel.
Twenty-six-year-old Miss Davis was due to appear in court on Wednesday in connection with a California gun battle which left four dead. When taken into detention by FBI agents, Miss Davis was unarmed and offered no resistance.
It has been alleged that Miss Davis had purchased guns used in the California shooting. Earlier, she had been the centre of a controversy concerning academic freedom in California after authorities tried to cancel her University teaching contract because of her communist beliefs.
She was arrested in New York on a warrant alleging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution on murder and kidnapping charges.
