  • Description

THE PAINTING "WHISTLER'S MOTHER" AND "ST. MARY MAGDALENE" WENT ON DISPLAY SUNDAY (10 FEBRUARY) AT ATLANTA, GEORGIA, IN THE UNITED STATES' DEEP SOUTH. THE SPECIAL EXHIBIT STEMMED FROM A TRAGEDY AT A PARIS AIRPORT LAST SPRING.

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-ONE CULTURAL LEADERS FROM THE ATLANTA AREA DIED IN A PLANE CRASH ON TAKEOFF FROM ORLY FIELD (3 JUNE '62). THE GROUP HAD BEEN IN FRANCE TOURING ART MUSEUMS...ON A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY IN THE ARTS. ALL ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE HAD BEEN PROMINENT IN THE ART ASSOCIATION IN ATLANTA. AFTER THE CRASH IN JUNE, THOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION WHO DID NOT MAKE THE FATAL TRIP AGREED TO CONTINUE PLANS FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING A NEW BUILDING FOR THE ATLANTA SCHOOL OF ART, NOT AS A MONUMENT BUT AS A LIVING MEMORIAL. TO ASSIST THE ATLANTANS IN BUILDING THEIR PROJECT THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAS LOANED FOR SIX WEEKS TWO OF ITS MASTERPIECES, WHICH NORMALLY HANG AMONG THE FRENCH NATIONAL COLLECTIONS IN THE LOUVRE.

"WHISTLER'S MOTHER" WAS PAINTED BY THE AMERICAN ARTIST JAMES WHISTLER IN 1872 AND "ST. MARY MAGDALENE" BY THE FRENCH ARTIST GEORGE DE LA TOUR, WHO WAS ONE OF THE LEADING ARTISTS OF THE 17TH CENTURY.
