Background: Budapest, like other major cities throughout the world, suffers from air pollution. A major cause of it is, as usual, fumes from motor vehicles--especially those with diesel engine. In an attempt to lessen pollution, police there have begun checking all diesel-engined vehicles for excessive pollution emission, and drivers of vehicles which don't meet the required standard of cleanliness are prosecuted in court. The testing machinery used, developed in Hungary, is a carbon-tester which is attached to vehicle exhaust-pipes, measuring the amount of carbon emitted.

SYNOPSIS: Budapest, the Hungarian capital, suffers from air pollution--a problem not uncommon in the world major cities. Authorities there as elsewhere, have fund a major cause of it is excessive fumes from motor vehicles--especially those with diesel engines. So, in an attempt to lessen pollution, City authorities and police have begun a drive to rid Budapest of "dirty" engines--with spot vehicle checks and court prosecution for offending motorists.

Police have started their drive for clean air by checking on diesel-engined vehicles. Motorists are pulled up to the side of the road, and checkers get to work with a device developed in Hungary--a carbon-testing machine which measures carbon-emission through vehicle exhaust pipes.

Offending motorists are prosecuted--for, as police point out, it is easy and inexpensive to cure a diesel engine of excessive pollution. So far, they add, the motoring public has not complained about the spot checks.
