  • Description

To commemorate the re-birth of the second Republic in 1945, May Day - May 1st - was declared a national holiday in Austria. Celebrating its 70th May Day parade, the Austrian Socialist Party organized a banner carrying parade through Vienna's streets. From a dais outside the Town Hall, Party leaders acknowledged shouts from participants as the procession filed past.

Austria's small Communist Party, not presented in Parliament, held a small celebratory parade through the City's outer suburbs.

May Day - now officially a national holiday - will in future be celebrated in Austria...without a parade.
