  • Description

THREE-THOUSAND WOMEN AT SEROWE IN BECHUANALAND ARE BUILDING A DAM, BUT THEY ARE NOT PAID IN MONEY FOR THEIR LABOURS -- THEY ARE PAID IN KIND -- FOOD ENOUGH TO KEEP THE SHADOW OF FAMINE AT BAY FOR THEM AD THEIR RELATIVES.

THE DAM IS BEING BUILT WITH THEIR BARE HANDS. THE WORK IS URGENT -- TO CONSERVE WATER FOR THE VILLAGE WHEN THE RAINS COME. OTHER VILLAGERS ARE BUSY ON OTHER PROJECTS, AND LIKE THE DAM BUILDERS ARE PART OF THE COUNTRY'S FOOD FOR WORK SCHEME.

THE FOOD IS A GIFT FROM THE WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME AND WITHOUT IT MANY BECHUANAS WOULD STARVE ON THE LAND TURNED BARREN BY CONSISTENT DROUGHT. EACH WORKER GETS ENOUGH FOOD FOR FIVE DEPENDENTS FOR A WEEK -- CORNMEAL OR SORGHUM, SULTANAS, VEGETABLE OIL AND DRIED MILK. SEROWE IS THE BIRTH PLACE OF THE PRIME MINISTER MR. SERETSE KHAMA.
