  • Description

AIRCRAFT TAXIING IN; NEWSMEN WAITING; GREY DOWN STEPS AND GREETED; GREY TALKING TO NEWSMEN; (SOF).

TRANSCRIPTS : QUESTION: WE'RE TOLD MR. GREY THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT CHINA.

    GREY: NOT AT THE MOMENT.

QUESTION: THAT'S UNDERSTANDABLE. BUT CAN YOU TELL US IF YOU EVER DESPAIRED OF EVER GETTING HOME AT ALL.

GREY: I FELT VERY VERY LOW MANY TIMES. BUT I DID NOT DESPAIR.

QUESTION: CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU LEARNED THAT YOU WERE GOING TO BE RELEASED.

GREY: I THINK THE VERY FIRST INTIMATION I HAD WAS WHEN MR. DENNIS HEALEY WAS VISITING HONG KONG AND AT A PRESS CONFERENCE AFTERWARDS. HE SAID HE EXPECTED I WOULD BE RELEASED WHEN THE LAST CHINESE JOURNALIST WAS RELEASED SOMEWHERE AROUND THE END OF JUNE OR EARLY JULY. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD A FIRM INDICATION I WOULD BE RELEASED AND I BEGAN TO HOPE THAT THIS WOULD COME OFF THIS TIME.

QUESTION: HOW ARE YOU FEELING PHYSICALLY NOW.

GREY: WELL IF YOU WOULD TAKE ABOUT 300 JOURNALISTS ALL WITH LIGHTS FROM THE PLACE I MIGHT BE ABLE TO TELL YOU. THIS ITSELF IS SOMETHING OF AN ORDEAL ALTHOUGH QUITE A PLEASANT ONE.

QUESTION: YOU HAD A BIT OF THROAT TROUBLE ... YOU TOLD YOUR MOTHER.

GREY: IT'S TOO DIFFICULT TO GO INTO THAT. I'M FEELING BETTER. YOU KNOW THE EMOTIONAL EXCITEMENT OF EMERGING AFTER TWO YEARS IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT AFFECTS ONE'S METABOLISM AND SO ON I'M NOT SLEEPING AND EATING PROPER BUT APART FROM THAT I'M FEELING HAPPY AND FIT.

Background: ANTHONY GREY, THE FORMER PEKING CORRESPONDENT FOR THE BRITISH NEWS AGENCY REUTER, ARRIVED IN LONDON TODAY AFTER MORE THAN TWO YEARS UNDER HOUSE ARREST IN CHINA.

THE 31 YEAR OLD JOURNALIST FLEW IN FROM KARACHI WHERE HE HAD STOPPED OFF ON HIS HOMEWARD JOURNEY. MR. GREY HAD BEEN CONFIDED TO A 12 FOOT SQUARE WHITEWASHED ROOM IN HIS HOUSE DURING THE TIME OF THE RAMPAGES OF THE RED GUARDS IN 1967.

HE WAS NEVER CHARGED WITH ANY OFFENCE BUT WAS HELD IN RETALIATION FOR THE IMPRISONMENT OF 13 COMMUNIST NEWSPAPER WORKERS WHO HAD BEEN CONVICTED OF OFFENSES DURING DISTURBANCES IN 1967.

HE WAS RELEASED A WEEK AGO WHEN THE LAST OF THE 13 WORKERS WAS FREED IN HONG KONG. HE RECEIVED TUMULTUOUS GREETING FROM HIS COLLEAGUES WHEN HE STEPPED OFF THE AIRCRAFT IN LONDON AND SPOKE OF HIS ORDEAL.
