  • Description

Sixteen scientists working for the Greek Chamber of Technology -- a government advisory group -- say that the ancient monuments that surmount the Acropolis of Athens have suffered more damage in the past twenty-five years than in the past twenty-five centuries.

The Acropolis is surmounted by four buildings that date to Greece's Golden Age -- more than two-thousand-four-hundred years ago -- and is surrounded by modern Athens. It is the rumble of Athens' automobile traffic and the fumes from its cars, factories, and aircraft that pose the most serious problem. The roar of the traffic causes cracks in the marble, and the fumes combine with water to form an acid that eats it away.

111 treatment of the buildings on the Acropolis isn't now. In 1687, during the Venetian siege, the Parthenon was blown apart when a shell hit a store of gunpowder the Turks had left there.

The constant wear caused by tourists' feet isn't considered as serious a problem as the combination of air and noise pollution that seriously threatens what remains of the buildings.
