    Background: Watched by the 600 members, President Nasser of the United Arab Republic, inaugurated the first session of the State's new National Assembly, July 21. There are 400 Assembly members from the Southern Region - Egypt - and 200 members form the Northern Region - Syria.

    Among the guests at the opening ceremony was the President of the Sudanese Armed Forces, L.G. Ibrahim Abbud, who is holder of the Nile Cordon. Also attending were members of the diplomatic corps, and senior officers of the U.A.R. Armed Forces.

    President Nasser gave his address after the National Assembly leader, Anwar El Sadate, made the opening speech.
