Background: IN KUALA LUMPUR, NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER MR. WALTER NASH OPENED THE NEW FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA, JUNE 6. THE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN FINANCED BY A GBP250,000 GRANT FROM THE NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT UNDER THE COLOMBO PLAN.

THE NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MALAYA'S DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER TUN ABDUL RAZAK, WAS RECEIVED AT THE UNIVERSITY BY VICE-CHANCELLOR PROFESSOR A. OPPENHEIM.

OPENING THE FACULTY, MR. NASH SAID THAT BETTER CROPS AND HARVESTS IN MALAYA AT A TIME OF GROWING POPULATION WILL BE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION OF THE FACULTY. HE SAID THE FACULTY SHOULD GIVE GREAT IMPETUS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYAN AGRICULTURE. MR. NASH SAID HE WAS SURE THE FACULTY WOULD SOLVE MANY OF MALAYA'S PROBLEMS AS SIMILAR INSTITUTIONS HAVE SOLVED NEW ZEALAND'S PROBLEMS.

MALAYA IS A FOOD-DEFICIT COUNTRY AND IMPORTS 150-200,000 TONS OF RICE YEARLY. SINCE THE COUNTRY ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE IN 1957, THE MALAYAN GOVERNMENT HAS LAID EMPHASIS ON RURAL AND AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT TO MAKE THE COUNTRY SELF-SUFFICIENT IN FOODSTUFFS. APART FROM FOOD, THE FACULTY WILL HELP IMPROVE MALAYA'S VITAL PLANTATION INDUSTRY, RUBBER, FRUITS AND OTHER AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS.
