INTRODUCTION: Italy's Sandro Munari, driving a Lancia Stratos, won a record third successive Monte Carlo rally on Friday (28 January). Munari is the only driver ever to have won the event three years in succession.
SYNOPSIS: Munari has driven his Lancia Stratos in his three wins, but he also won the event in 1972 driving a different model Lancia.
Second this year were Jean-Claude Andruet and his co-driver "Biche" in a Fiat 131 Abarth. They won in 1973.
The Spanish Seat team did well in the rally, finishing third and fourth. Car No, 12 driven by Antonio Zanini was third, over 11 minutes behind Munari's Stratos. His teammate Salvador Canellas was another eight minutes behind him at the finish line.
The best woman driver was Christine Dacremont, whose Lancia Stratos took sixth place.
Lars Carlsson of Sweden finished 10th in his Opel Kadett.
There was a big crowd at the finish to see Munari and his co-driver Silvio Maiga cross the line. Munari's four wins equals the record held by Frenchman Jean Trevoux.
There was also a celebration for third place men Zanini and Petisco of Spain and the traditional champagne to welcome the winners of the Coupe des Dames...the best women finishers...Christine Dacremont and Colette Galli of France. They finished about 25 minutes behind the winner. More than a quarter of the original field of 177 cars dropped out of the rally.
