SCU INT. Chaban-Delmas Speaks
"The death of M. Pompidou has been a great surprise and leaves us confused. Four years ago the death of General de Gaulle had greatly disturbed France and this new event happens in a very difficult time. The existence of a single candidate for the Left raises a problem of freedom. The rise in prices affects everybody. It's a problem of solidarity. I am making a contract with every Frenchman .. it's a contract for progress, it's a problem of truth. At last France within her independence must pursue her human mission in Europe and in the world."

Background: The former French Premier -- M. Jacques Chaban-Delmas -- has won the full support of the powerful Gaullist U.D.R. Party, in his bid to become the next President of France.
The U.D.R.'s Central Committee and its Parliamentary Deputies approved M. Chanban-Delmas' candidacy on Sunday (7 April), after a meeting attended by top Gaullist leaders.
The Secretary General of the U.D.R., Mr. Alexandre Sanguinetti, said the party has agreed to support the 59-year-old Bordeaux Mayor because "we believe that he will be capable of continuing the Gaullist heritage and that he is the best candidate for gaining the most votes".
M. Chaban-Delmas announced his candidacy last Thursday (4th April) -- two days after the death of President Georges Pompidou.
M. Chaban-Delmas made a short speech following the approval of his candidacy. A translation of that speech appears below.
