  • Description

The Fiat Motor Company of Italy and the Italian Naval League have joined forces in an experiment that may help to re-stock the diminishing fish population of Genoa. Fiat has donated one thousand cars which are being dumped at sea off Genoa. The theory being tested is that battered and rusting vehicle hulks make ideal homes for fish.

Genoa was chosen for the experiment because it has suffered from the depletion of the fish population, and because of the large number of old motor vehicles available. Marine scientists believe that when the cars have rusted and are covered by a layer of sediment they will provide a near natural environment for fish. To safeguard against pollution all the vehicles were drained of petrol and oil.

If the experiment succeeds it could be adapted in other areas that are short of fish, and where the disposal of old vehicles is a problem.
