  • Description

Two former Cabinet ministers were arrested on Thursday (May 28) and charged with conspiring to import arms into the Republic.

Detectives brought Mr Charles Haughey, former Finance Minister and Mr Neil Blaney, former Minister of Agriculture into court after questioning them at their homes.

Both men were fired earlier this month by Prime Minister Jack Lynch who alleged they were involved in a plot to smuggle in guns from abroad to aid the Catholic minority in Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister refused to divulge details of the alleged plot when news of it hit Parliament three weeks ago.

After being formally charged before the Dublin District Court, the two men were let free on bail of GBP1,000 sterling each.
