    THE SOVIET UNION FINISHED OVER-ALL WINNERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD CANOEING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN EAST BERLIN YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). HUNGARY WERE SECOND AND RUMANIA, THE 1963 CHAMPIONS, CAME THIRD. THE FINAL RACES IN THE COMPETITION TOOK PLACE IN POURING RAIN.

    THE WINNERS OF THE THREE EVENTS SHOWN ON FILM WERE: SINGLE CANADIAN CANOE OVER 1,000 METRES: DETLEF LEWE OF WEST GERMANY IN 4 MINS 29.33 SECONDS; WOMEN'S FOUR-SEATER KAYAK 500 METRES: SOVIET UNION IN 1 MIN 45.91 SECONDS; MEN'S SINGLE RELAY 500 METRES: SOVIET UNION 7 MINS 36.05 SECONDS.

    THE FINAL PLACING WERE A COMPLETE REVERSAL ON POSITIONS AT THE END OF THE PREVIOUS DAY'S RACING. RUMANIA HAD BEEN IN THE LEAD WITH HUNGARY SECOND AND THE SOVIET UNION THIRD.

    THE SOVIET UNION WON FIVE GOLD MEDALS ON THE FINAL DAY, BRINGING THEIR TOTAL TO SIX GOLD, THREE SILVER AND FOUR BRONZE MEDALS. THE HUNGARIANS, AT THEIR BEST OVER THE LONGER DISTANCES, ENDED WITH THREE GOLD, THREE SILVER AND FIVE BRONZE. RUMANIA HAD FIVE GOLD, ONE SILVER AND ONE BRONZE.

    EAST GERMANY WERE FOURTH AND WEST GERMANY FIFTH.

    A TOTAL OF 463 COMPETITORS FROM 24 COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE THREE-DAY CHAMPIONSHIPS.
