President Glafkos Clerides of Cyprus on Thursday (8 August) announced an entirely new Government for the island. Mr. Clerides, who took over as President almost three weeks ago, named a seven-man Cabinet comprised of men with experience an sense to solve the problems caused by the Turkish invasion.
On Wednesday (August 7) the President visited members of the National Guard injured during fighting in recent weeks. The guardsmen are being treated in Nicosia General Hospital. President Clerides shook hands with a number of the guardsmen and offered some cigarettes. He also visited people displaced by the fighting. The refugees, mainly from villages in the Kyrenia area, are being temporarily housed in Nicosia school buildings. They're mainly women, children and old people.
President Clerides on Wednesday also met the new commander of the National guard, General Karayiannis. The general met the President at his office in Nicosia, and spoke to newsmen before the conference.
In Nicosia, resident have started moving out of the area along the so-called "Green line", which separates the Greek and Turkish communities. There has been heavy firing across the line and several shops have been destroyed by fire.
