TRANSCRIPT: "Pittsburgh's Doc Ellis lasted until the fourth when Philadelphia scored four runs. The first came home on a single by Gary Maddox. The Phillies have now won nine in a row from their intra-state rivals. Tom Underwood has a typical pitcher's batting average, but he got the key hit. Underwood, who says he has changed his batting stance, drove in two runs with a double and, as is typical with pitchers, Underwood is more proud of that than his performance on the mound. He said the Phillies are quietly confident as they close in on Pittsburgh in baseball's only tight race. Larry Bowa drove in the fourth run with a single...and that was all for Ellis who is seven and seven. Bowa is on a hot streak. He had four hits in this game and has hit safely in eight straight games, fifteen of the last sixteen. Underwood allowed just four hits in winning eleven games against seven losses. The 21 year old left handler has to be considered in the National League rookie of the year balloting on his performance so far. In four starts against the power hitting Pirates, Underwood has allowed five earned runs."

Background: The Philadelphia Phillies won their second straight game against the National League leaders the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night (29 July) to move within three-and-a-half games of the lead. The Phillies won the first game of the triple-header 5-2 breaking a string of eight consecutive losses at Pittsburgh. They won Tuesday night's game -- the second -- 5-1.

Phillies' pitcher, young left handler Tom Underwood had a great match.

He tossed a four-hitter for his 11th victory and drove in two runners with a double hit in the fourth innings. He then scored the final run of the frame when Larry Bowa drove a single.

The Phillies had scored earlier in the fourth when Gary Maddox hit a single to send home Jay Johnstone.

Their fifth run came in the eight on singles by Maddox and Johnstone.

The Pirates scored in the fourth on a single and two groundnuts.
