  • Description

The invasion of the Israeli Embassy in a quiet backstreet of Bangkok passed off almost unnoticed because the diplomatic communities were attending the coming of age ceremony of the Crown Prince of Thailand. The four armed Arabs were already inside the Embassy, holding six members of the staff at gunpoint before a gardener gave the alarm. Reporters and armed police gathered around the building and prepared for a long seige. The guerrillas threw notes out of the Embassy windows and negotiated with the Thai authorities over the telephone. At first they demanded the release of guerrillas imprisoned in Israel. Later they began bargaining for their own lives. It was not until early next day that the Thai government provided the four men with a jet plane to fly to Cairo. Before that, tension ran high as the guerrillas threatened to blow up the entire Embassy if their demands were not met. They claimed that other guerrilla groups were hiding in Bangkok waiting/assist them. The Thai /to authorities look no chances. Over 200 heavily armed police surrounded the shuttered Embassy building while floodlights were moved into place to illuminate the compound throughout the long hot night.
