    PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU RECENTLY ANNOUNCED AN AMNESTY FOR STUDENTS IMPRISONED LAST MONTH FOR THEIR PART IN ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATIONS IN KINSHASA LAST JUNE.

    THE AMNESTY WAS MADE TO MARK THE PRESIDENT'S 39TH BIRTHDAY. THIRTY-ONE STUDENTS WERE SENTENCED -- SOME OF THEM TO 20 YEARS IMPRISONMENT -- AFTER DEMONSTRATING FOR HIGHER GRANTS.

    FIVE WERE SENTENCED TO THE MAXIMUM 20 YEARS TERM FOR WHAT WAS CALLED "AN ATTEMPT AGAINST THE SECURITY OF THE STATE".

    THE COMMUNIQUE STATED THAT THE AMNESTY ERASED ALL TRACES OF THE UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. THOSE RELEASED WERE TAKEN FROM THE MAIN KINSHASA PRISON LAST WEEK BY A COACH BELONGING TO THE PRESIDENCY AND DRIVEN BACK TO THEIR CAMPUSES. THEY HAD SERVED ONLY A MONTH OF THEIR SENTENCES.
