    IN 1944 NEARLY 1,000 JAPANESE PRISONERS OF WAR REBELLED AGAINST THEIR CAPTORS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. DURING THE FIGHTING WHICH FOLLOWED, 234 PRISONERS WERE KILLED.

    TWENTY YEARS LATER A MEMORIAL WAS UNVEILED BY THE JAPANESE AMBASSADOR IN AUSTRALIA. WREATHS WERE LAID ON THE BLACK GRANITE MEMORIAL BY LEADING JAPANESE OFFICIALS WHILE AN AUSTRALIAN BAND PLAYED THE LAST POST.
