    EUROPEAN ATHLETES WON MOST OF THE CLOSING EVENTS IN THE TWO-DAY TRACK AND FIELD MEET IN MONTREAL, CANADA, BETWEEN EUROPE AND A TEAM REPRESENTING THE AMERICAS. IN OVERALL COMPETITION, STAGED ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY, THE EUROPEAN TEAM EMERGED WITH 169 POINTS TO THE AMERICAS' 155.

    THURSDAY'S EVENTS WERE HELD IN POOR WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND THE PERFORMERS OF THE ATHLETES SEEMED TO SUFFER CORRESPONDINGLY. AT ONE STAGE THE WIND WAS SO STRONG IT TORE THE ALUMINIUM ROOF FROM AN OFFICIAL BUILDING IN MONTREAL'S EXPO STADIUM.

    THE MEN'S 800 METRES EVENT WAS WON BY FRANZ-JOSEF KEMPER, OF WEST GERMANY. JEAN-PIERRE DUFRESNE OF FRANCE WAS SECOND, WITH BRIAN McLARON OF CANADA THIRD. BILL CROTHERS OF CANADA FILLED FOURTH PLACE.

    LAJOS MECSER OF HUNGARY DEFEATED WORLD CHAMPION GASTON ROELANTS OF BELGIUM TO WIN THE MEN'S 5,000 METRE EVENT. JUAN MARTINEZ OF MEXICO WAS THIRD AND LOUIS SPOTT OF THE UNITED STATES WAS FOURTH.

    ROELANTS CLAIMED AFTER THE RACE THAT HE LET MECSER WIN. HE SAID HE WAS ANGRY BECAUSE HE HAD BEEN MOVE FROM THE STEEPLECHASE EVENT TO THE 5,000 METRES. ROELANTS WAS QUOTED AS SAYING LATER: "WHEN WE WERE RUNNING DOWN THE STRETCH, I SAID TO MECSER, I DON'T LIKE THE 5,000. YOU WIN."
    IN THE MEN'S POLE VAULT HERVE D'ENCAUSE OF FRANCE OUTVAULTED RIVALS DICK RAILSBACK OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO WAS SECOND, AND CHARALAMBOS PAPANICOLAOU OF GREECE, WHO WAS THIRD.

    IRENA KIRSZENSTEIN OF POLAND WON THE WOMEN'S 200-METRE DASH. SHE WAS FOLLOWED BY UNA MORRIS OF JAMAICA, IRENE PIOTROWSKI OF CANADA, AND ANNA MARIA TOTH OF HUNGARY.
