    Resuming her Indian tour after a brief stay in Pakistan, Queen Elizabeth visited the GBP105 million steel plant at Durgapur in West Bengal, Feb 16, - the biggest single construction job ever undertaken by Britain overseas.

    At Durgapur, a fast-growing modern steel, township, the Royal party received by Sirdar Swaran Singh, Minister for Steel, Mines and Fuel. Then the Queen inspected the giant plant which has been partly financed by British loans, built by a consortium of 13 British firms, and manned with British-trained Indian staff.

    Described by Prime Minister Nehru as "a modern centre of pilgrimage", the Durgapur works are to be completed by the end of this year. The first ingot was cast here last April, Annual production as from next January will be one million ingot tons, to be stepped up eventually to 2 1/2 million.
