  • Description

During his three-day visit to the Netherlands, the Shah of Persia was taken by Queen
Juliana and Prince Bernhard to Friesland May 21 to see some of the country's
    old customs.

The Royal visitor's Friesland tour was highlighted by a traditional tilting
match. Couples in national costume, driving in gigs drawn by black,
high-stepping Friesland horses, competed in thrusting a lance through a ring at
high speed. The women competitors made a striking picture in their handsome
dress and brilliantly polished head pieces of pure gold with lace caps. All the
gigs were elaborately painted - some were more than 200 years old - and the
horses' coats had been brushed to shinning perfection.
