Background: CRIME IS NOT A BIG SOCIAL PROBLEM IN PEKING, ACCORDING TO INFORMATION GLEANED BY A VISNEWS CAMERA TEAM ON A RECENT VISIT TO THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. THE DIRECTOR OF PEKING MUNICIPAL JAIL SAID THERE HAD NOT BEEN A MURDER IN THE CAPITAL FOR TEN YEARS.

THE PEKING JAIL IS SAID TO BE THE ONLY ONE IN THE CAPITAL. INSIDE ARE ABOUT 1,800 PRISONERS HELD FOR EITHER POLITICAL OR CIVIL OFFENCES. MORE THAN HALF WERE GUILTY OF CIVIL CRIMES, MAINLY ROBBERY.

ALL OF THEM WORK, WHATEVER THEIR CRIMES. THE NYLON SOCK MACHINE USED IN THIS FILM IS BRITISH.

THE INMATES WERE VERY QUIET, BUT THE DIRECTOR SAID THERE WAS NO RULE AGAINST CONVERSATION.

IN THE RECREATION GROUND OF PEKING JAIL OUR CREW JOINED A GROUP OF POLITICAL PRISONERS, WHO SPOKE ABOUT THEMSELVES THROUGH AN INTERPRETER.
