  • Description

The Bangladesh Government would put on trial all Pakistanis who were charged with war crimes, the Prime Minister, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reaffirmed on Monday (10 April). He rejected suggestions from Pakistan for an exchange of the alleged war criminals for Bengalis stranded in Pakistan. The Prime Minister has said that he is negotiating for the release of Bengalis in Pakistan, but maintains there will be no contact with the Pakistani Government until it recognises Bangladesh.

In addition to Pakistanis accused of war crimes, Biharis are also alleged to have committed atrocities, but it is not clear whether they will also be tried. The Biharis, many of whom came from the Indian state of Bihar, are accused of collaborating with Pakistan during the November Indo-Pakistan war. There are a million of them in Bangladesh, and most live in ill-equipped camps. If it were not for the International Red Cross, it is possible they would receive no food or water. Many wish to be repatriated to Pakistan, but no such arrangement is possible in the near future because of the political situation.
