  • Description

Five people were killed outright and almost fifty injured - most of them seriously - when a Ferrari racing car, driven by Armendo Cifuentes, hurtled out of control during the Cuban Grand Prix in Havana today. The car hurtled into a mass of spectators, knocking them over like ninepins...there was no time to jump for safety. While ambulances were used for the seriously injured, the bonnets of the other racing cars were pressed into emergency service. The race was immediately abandoned. The tragedy occurred in the sixth lap of a race that was fated from the first: World Champion Juan Fangio was kidnapped and could not take part, demonstrators provoked ugly scenes because, they claimed, the Government should look to its unemployment problem rather than sponsoring sports events, such as the Grand Prix. A further note of horror sprang from rumours that parts of the track actually had been 'sabotaged' by oil...
