Visnews filmed Jan 6 Mr. Harold Watkinson, Britain's Minister of Transport, addressing the opening meeting at Church House, London, of the Assembly of the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO), marking the inauguration of the first permanent intergovernmental organization in the field of maritime transport. The IMCO is the 12th United Nations Specialized Agency.
Some 28 member states sent representatives to the first IMCO Assembly. Among them were Argentine, Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Great Britain and the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. West Germany has applied for membership, but since the country is not a member of the United Nations, it's admission to IMCO must be approved by a two-thirds vote of the Assembly.
The aims of the Organization are among others: To provide a means for cooperation among the various governments in matters concerning international shipping, to encourage highest possible standards of maritime safety and efficiency of navigation, the removal of unnecessary restrictions on international shipping, the encouragement of the development of national shipping providing this does not restrict the freedom of ships of other nations, and to provide a tribunal dealing with unfair restrictive practices by shipping concerns.
