  • Description

Officer cadets from the United Kingdom and eleven other countries received their commissions at Britain's top military college -- the Royal Military Academy at Sndhurst -- on Friday (8 November).

Ninety-five of the 460 cadets taking part in the Sovereign's Parade received their commissions as second Lieutenants from the British Army's Adjutant General, Lieutenant General Sir Cacil Blacker.

Fourteen officer cadets from Afghanistan, Fiji, Malawi, Malaysia, the Sultanate of Oman, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates also passed out of the Academy.

The Sovereign's Parade -- held three times a year -- is a relatively new ceremony. The Royal Military academy was founded in 1741. But it was not until 1948 that King George VI took the passing out parade and decreed that it should be known as the Sovereign's Parade.
