  • Description

Alagie N'jie, a 22-year-old Gambian international footballer popularly known as Biri, made his debut for the British First Division team Derby County today (Monday, 14th December.)
Biri arrived in Britain last week to start a month's trial with Derby county. In his homeland he is called the "African P?le" and had 500 goals to his credit.

His first match was against British Olympic side - amateur players from all over Britain who are already practising for the Olympic Games at Munich in 1974.

Biri had a quiet but satisfying introduction to English football. He obviously found the pace fast and the weather extremely cold - he wore gloves - but he showed considerable potential. He troubled the Olympic side's goalkeeper with a clever overhead kick and laid on a good pass for a colleague, who shot wide of the posts. The Olympic XI won by one goal to nil.

Derby County are one of the most famous sided in Britain but so far they are not having a very good season. Some new blood could give them a useful boost but it is too soon yet to say whether their young West African trialist will be invited to join them on a Permanent basis.
