  • Description

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE GAVE CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO, THE LEADER OF THE YORUBAS, A TUMULTUOUS WELCOME WHEN HE ARRIVED IN THE NIGERIAN CAPITAL ON SUNDAY. CHIEF AWOLOWO, MAKING HIS FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE IN LAGOS SINCE HIS RELEASE FROM PRISON EARLIER THIS YEAR, IS LEADING THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT DELEGATION AT NIGERIA'S CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE.

MANY PEOPLE IN THE WELCOMING THRONG, MOSTLY MARKET WOMEN, HAD GATHERED AT THE CARTER BRIDGE SIX HOURS BEFORE CHIEF AWOLOWO WAS SCHEDULED TO ENTER LAGOS ISLAND.

THE CROWD WAVED DOZENS OF BANNERS VOICING THEIR CONFIDENCE IN THE CHIEF AND ASKING HIM TO HELP MAKE LAGOS A SEPARATE STATE. THEY CRIED "AWO! AWO"! AND CHANTED SONGS.

TRAFFIC WAS BROUGHT ALMOST TO A STANDSTILL AS THE CROWD SURGED IN AROUND CHIEF AWOLOWO'S MOTORCADE, AND AT ONCE STAGE HE HAD TO LEAVE HIS CAR FOR SAFETY IN A POLICE VAN.

PASSENGERS RUSHED OUT OF BUSES AND DRIVERS STOPPED CARS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF THE LEADER OF FOUR-MILLION YORUBAS IN WESTERN NIGERIA AND OF A PREDOMINANT NUMBER OF YORUBAS IN LAGOS.

(NIGERIA'S CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE RESUMED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) AFTER A THREE-WEEK ADJOURNMENT, WITHOUT THE DELEGATES FROM THE RICH EASTERN REGION.)
