  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly has called for a complete severing of links with Rhodesia and the imposition of sanctions against South Africa and Portugal.

The Assembly voted on Thursday (7 December) on a resolution from the Trusteeship and Colonial Affairs Committee. It sought an end to rail, sea, air, postal and radio communications with Rhodesia.

Sanctions were sought against South Africa and Portugal because of their failure to observe the existing boycott against Rhodesia.

The Assembly voted 93 to eight, with 23 abstentions, for action.

The Assembly itself has no power to order sanctions, which are the prerogative of the Security Council. However, the resolution drew the attention of the council "to the urgent need to widen the scope of sanctions against the illegal regime to include all the measures envisaged under article 41 of the Charter."
The resolution requested all Governments which had not done so, to take more stringent enforcement measures against sanction-breakers.

Voting against the resolution were Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
