  • Description

Delegates who attended the three-day world power conference in Accra yesterday (Thursday) spent several hours inspecting Ghana's giant Volta river project at Akosombo. The visit was arranged by the Volta River Authority to enable the delegates to see for themselves some of the country's development projects.

At Akosombo the delegates, divided into groups, were shown the hydro-electric plant and control room.

They were also shown a plan of towns in the country being supplied with power from Akosombo.

At the marine division the visitors went on a board a launch for a cruise on the Volta lake -- believed to be one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

Later, at a lunch given for them by the Authority Ghana's Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Harlley, said Ghana's hydro-electric power station was rated as one of the largest in the world and was of immense value to the country's development.

Mr. Harlley, who is also chairman of the Authority's board and vice-chairman of the National Liberation Council, said that the station had been built at a great cost and sacrifice when the country needed all the resources available for development.

Professor Lombardi Valueri, chairman of the Italian National Committee of the world power conference, said he had been pleased to learn that between 300 and 500 Italian technicians had worked with Ghanaians to build the dam.
