  • Description

AUSTRALIA'S CHALLENGER FOR THE AMERICAN'S CUP YACHT RACING CLASSIC, GRETEL II, HAD HER FIRST TRIALS ON SYDNEY HARBOUR LAST SUNDAY (APRIL 19). IT'LL BE THE THIRD TIME AUSTRALIA HAS MADE A BID TO CAPTURE THE COVETED YACHTING TROPHY...THE MOST IMPORTANT PRIZE IN 12 METRE YACHTING.

AUSTRALIA FIRST CHALLENGED FOR THE AMERICA'S CUP IN 1962. HER ENTRY WAS GRETEL I WHICH DIE BETTER THAN ANYONE EXPECTED. SHE WON ONE OF THE RACES HELD AT NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND AND WAS CLOSE BEHIND HER AMERICAN RIVAL IN EACH OF THE OTHER RACES.

GRETEL II IS DESIGNED BY ALAN PAYNE. SHE SLIPPED INTO SYDNEY HARBOUR UNDER A CLOAK OF SECRECY. YACHTING EXPERTS SAY THAT THE YACHT HAS A "SECRET WEAPON" WHICH THE AUSTRALIAN WANT TO KEEP UNDER COVER UNTIL THE TIME OF THE RACES.

PUSHED ALONG BY A STIFF NORTH WESTERLY BREEZE, GRETEL II SAILED UNDER SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE TOWARDS THE PACIFIC OCEAN. THE FIRST RUN WAS MERELY TO ALLOW THE CREW TIME TO GET ACQUAINTED WITH THE TWELVE METRE VESSEL. SHE WAS SKIPPERED BY JIM HARDY, ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S LEADING YACHTSMEN.
