  • Description

By-elections held in Greece on Sunday (20 April) were seen as a test for the five-month-old Government of Constantine Karamanlis.

The elections, on the island of Corfu and in Kozani in northern Greece, were caused by the resignation of the Corfu representative and the death of the member for kozani.

Both were members of the ruling New Democracy Party of Mr. Karamanlis.

Opposition parties -- including the Communists and the Socialists -- campaigned with vigour for the by-election ... as did the Government.

Although there was no danger of the Government losing office (they hold 218 of the 300 seats in the Parliament) Mr. Karamanlis was anxious not to lose popularity after only five months in office.
