    King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev of Nepal and Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah arrived in Tokyo Monday (15th May) for a week-long State visit and were welcomed at an official ceremony at the Akasaka Palace by Crown Prince Akihito. The Crown Prince was standing in for his father, Emperor Hirohito, who is recovering from a slight illness. At the Akasaka Palace, Tokyo's official guest-house for visiting Heads of State, King Birendra also met Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, other Government Ministers, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

    The Nepalese King, who will have talks with japanese Ministers during his stay, is expected to seek Japanese understanding and co-operation for his "peace zone for economic development" plan, a concept which he sees as beginning in the China-India region, later spreading to South-East Asia and eventually all over the world. King Birendra will also try to enlist japanese support for his world. King Birendra will also try to enlist japanese support for his plea for access to the sea for land-locked nations such as Nepal. And in a recent interview in Nepal, King Birendra said that Nepal was ready to negotiate with Japan for a Kathmandu-Tokyo air link.

    On Sunday night (14th May) during a stopover in Peking on his way to Tokyo. Kind Birendra and Queen Aishwarya were entertained at a reception given by chinese Communist Party Chairman Hua Kuo-feng and other Chinese leaders. Chairman Hua told King Birendra at the reception that he believed there were 'good prospects" for greater Sino-Nepalese co-operation.

    The Royal couple leaves Tokyo on Friday (19th May) for a three-day tour of Nagasaki and Fukuoka; and they will leave for Kathmandu on Sunday (21st May).
