Background: Soccer, and South Korea beat Iraq by one goal to nil in the final of Malaysia's annual Merdeka Soccer Tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
SYNOPSIS: The South Koreans, playing in the dark strip, were to prove too strong a side for Iraq, who are newcomers to the tournament. But though the South Koreans dominated play from the very start, there was no score in the first half.
The Koreans never let off the pressure, and were playing in the Iraquis' half for the major part of the game. But Iraq had managed to hold the Koreans to a draw in a preliminary clash, so they had everything to play for, and started well in the second half. But in the 56th minute, the Koreans found a chink in the armour. They took the ball down the middle with short passes into the Iraqi box. Iraq's full-back Ali, failed to intercept, and Korean striker, Cha, raced past him, to blast in a shot.
It was South Korea's seventh win in the tournament at Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka stadium. Malaysia finished third, the Libyan Jamahiriyah fourth, Burma fifth, Thailand sixth and Indonesia last.
