Background: Miss Margaret Kenyatta, the eldest daughter of President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, was installed as the city of Nairobi's first woman mayor on Tuesday (4 August).
At the traditional ceremony at Nairobi's City Hall, Miss Kenyatta took the oath of office. The President's daughter, a spinster, has been active in politics for many years and has previously held the post of Deputy-Mayor in the City's administration. After being sworn into the office Miss Kenyatta signed the documents confirming her position. Tuesday's ceremony formally confirmed the election and enables her to take over from retiring Mayor, Isaac Lugonza. Mr. Lugonza is now a member of the Kenyan Parliament.
