  • Description

Franz Joseph Kemper of West Germany established a new meet record in the 1,000 yard run at the 48th annual New York Knights of Columbus Track Meet in New York City Friday night (3 Feb). John Thomas, former world high jump title holder, won his event. Thomas had once retired from competition.

Kemper, who had done badly in his previous U.S. appearances, won the J. Francis Cardinal McIntyre 1,000 yard run by 12 yards, with a time of 2 minutes 08.4 seconds. That was a new Knights of Columbus meet record, breaking by one-tenth of a second the old mark set by Jerry Siebert of Berkley, California in 1961. Kemper was apparently aided by a week of workouts at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. "I was surprised no one came at me, I was listening for Crothers," Kemper commented after the victory. Crothers is pharmacist Bill Crothers of the East York Track Club, Toronto, Canada who was second.

John Thomas, of the Boston Athletic Association, who had duelled with Soviet High Jumper Valery Brumel---the present high jump record holder---at the Olympics and at past meets, looked impressive. He won the running high jump with a leap of 7 ft., a full four inches under the record set by Brumel at a New York meet in 1963. Lew Hoyt of the southern California Striders Track Club was second with a jump of 6 feet 10 inches.

In other events, Noel Carroll of Ireland, who recently starred for Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, set a new meet record in the 880 yard run with a time of 1 minute 51.1 seconds. At first, the announced winner was Peter Scott of Nebraska, but he was disqualified for interference after drifting in front of Carroll right at the finish.

Another non-U.S. competitor to win was Dave Ellis of the Toronto Olympic Club, who captured the two-mile run in a time of 8 minutes 49 secs.
