  • Description

MEETING IN MUNICH TODAY (WEDNESDAY), THE INTERNATIONAL LAWN TENNIS FEDERATION SHELVED THE CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION OF SOUTH AFRICAN MEMBERSHIP FOR ANOTHER YEAR.

FACED WITH A MOVE BY THE SOVIET UNION TO EXPEL SOUTH AFRICA BECAUSE OF THEIR APARTHEID RACIAL POLICY IN SPORT, THE FEDERAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE PERSUADED THE RUSSIANS TO ALLOW THE COMMITTEE TO CONTINUE NEGOTIATIONS WITH SOUTH AFRICA FOR ANOTHER YEAR. THE SOVIET PROPOSAL WAS EXPECTED TO BE THE MOST EXPLOSIVE ISSUE ON THE AGENDA AT THE FEDERATION'S ANNUAL MEETING.

THE FEDERATION'S PRESIDENT, MR. EATON-GRIFFITH OF BRITAIN, TOLD REPORTERS AFTER THE MEETING THAT AFTER A FRIENDLY DISCUSSION THE RUSSIANS AGREED TO ALLOW NEGOTIATIONS TO CONTINUE. MR GRIFFITH ADDED THAT THE FEDERATION HOPED THAT BOTH THE SOUTH AFRICAN TENNIS UNION, WHICH REPRESENTS THE UNION'S WHITE PLAYERS, AND THE TENNIS ASSOCIATION, FOR NON-WHITE PLAYERS, WOULD HAVE THE SAME OVERALL REPRESENTATION.

IT WAS AGREED THAT NEXT YEAR'S COMPETITION FOR THE FEDERATION CUP -- THE WOMEN'S WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP -- WOULD BE HELD AT TURIN, ITALY, AND THE 1967 COMPETITION IN WEST GERMANY.

AFTER A TWO YEAR TERM OF OFFICE, MR GRIFFITH WAS SUCCEEDED AS PRESIDENT BY MR. DA SILVA COSTA OF BRAZIL.
