  • Description

In Beirut on Sunday (8 January) Palestinian guerrillas staged a martyr's funeral amid thunder and torrential rain for Said Hammami, their representative who was shot dead by an assassin in London on January 4th.

SYNOPSIS: The coffin, draped with Palestinian and Lebanese flags and surrounded by wreaths was driven through the streets of Beirut to a mosque at the Arab University.

Four white-helmeted veterans of the Palestine Armed Struggle Command - the commando military police - were on the lorry to guard the coffin. A chartered plane had flown the coffin to Beirut from London, where a memorial service was held.

Palestinian Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat led Mr Hammami's widow Khalida into the building. She had accompanied her husband's body on its journey from London - where he had been shot dead on Wednesday (4 January). Mr Arafat and Mr Hammami had been close friends. Inside the mosque mourners stood by the coffin as ritual prayers were conducted during the service.

After the service Mr Arafat supported Mrs Hammami as they walked through the streets behind the coffin. As it left, Palestinian guerrillas fired volleys in a salute. The body was being taken to the airport to be flown to Jordan.

Mr Hammami is to be buried in Amman. He spent his childhood there after leaving Israel in 1948.

His family fled to Jordan when the State of Israel was created. The funeral cortege was escorted by 300 heavily armed commandos - some of whom were carrying rocket grenade launchers. The procession, followed by mourners, worked its way through the refugee camps of West Beirut. According to Reuters News Agency Mr Arafat's last minute decision to walk behind the coffin worried his security men. Torrential rain accompanied with thunder and lightning drenched mourners.

Palestinian girl guides carrying wreaths of yellow chrysanthemums and pink lilies contributed by PLO officials, were soaked in the downpour.
