Egypt beat Tunisia 3-2 in Cairo on Friday to take the lead in the African final qualifying group for the 1978 World Soccer Cup. They now need only a draw from the group's final match in Tunis on December the 11th to qualify for Argentina ... if they lose, however, Tunisia will go THROUGH.
SYNOPSIS: Egypt, playing in the lighter, green shirts, kicking left to right, went straight into the attack. But the match was 22 minutes old before there was any score.
It was Egypt, who took the lead ... through a penalty from Farouk Jaffar.
The Egyptians managed to hang on to their slim lead until the end of the first half...and it was from a corner eight minutes in to the second half that Mustapha Abdou headed in Egypt's second goal.
In the closing stages, the Tunisians staged a massive onslaught to try and pull back...but fine saves by goalkeeper Ikbami enabled the Egyptians to cling on to their lead, to the delight of the crowd estimated at 120,000.
After 82 minutes, Tunisia pulled a goal back through ben Aziz...
But Egypt went back onto the attack straight from the kickoff...and it was 3-1 after a goal from substitute Khatib, the country's former star striker who has been out of the game for six months with a thigh injury.
Tunisia completed the rush of goals making the score 3-2 on the 86th minute.
