  • Description

Austrian ski king Franz Klammer gave his downhill rivals a pre-olympic trouncing in the classic Hanhenkamm race Sunday (25 January) with a wining margin of more than two full seconds.

The result boosted him into second place in the men's world cup standings with 156 points, 10 behind the leader, Ingemar Stenmark.

The Hahnenkamm race, one of the high points of the world cup calendar and a dress rehearsal for the olympic downhill in Innsbruck eleven days from now, produced an Austrian team triumph.

Four skiers from the host nation were among the first six in the race with only Norway's Erik Haker, second, and Switzerland's Bernhard Russi, fifth, breaking through the Austrian phalanx.

For Klammer, it was the second successive win on the 3,510-metre Hahnenkamm, the most spectacular and testing of eh world's downhill courses.

His winning time was two minutes 3.79 seconds, just .57 seconds outside the record he set last year.

Haker's time, more than two seconds slower, bore witness to the ease of Klammer's triumph.

Klammer said after what was his fourth downhill win of the winter, "It was a very good piste and very well prepared. There were no difficulties at all and I was able to concentrate completely on the race."
Haker and third-placed skier, Austria's Josef Walcher, had returned to action after spells of injury.

Haker, known mainly as a giant slalom specialist, used this technical skills to full advantage and said after wards he felt his chances for the olympic downhill were good.
