    PAKISTAN'S NATIONAL DAY WAS MARKED ON TUESDAY WITH A MASSIVE MILITARY PARADE IN RAWALPINDI, ATTENDED BY PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN. SPEAKING LATER TO THOUSANDS GATHERED FOR THE OBSERVANCE, THE PRESIDENT REITERATED THAT THE PROBLEM OF KASHMIR WAS STILL THE MAIN SOURCE OF FRICTION BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN AND A DANGER TO WORLD PEACE.

    THE JOINT SERVICES PARADE WAS FOLLOWED BY AN INVESTITURE AT THE PRESIDENT'S HOUSE, AT WHICH HE PRESENTED CIVIL AND MILITARY AWARDS TO 150 PEOPLE, INCLUDING WAS WIDOWS. SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT OF THE PAKISTAN AIR FORCE JOINED A SPECTACULAR FLY-PAST BY MORE THAN 100 PLANES. COLUMNS OF THE PAKISTAN ARMY, NAVY AND AIR FORCE, SUPPORTED BY TANKS AND OTHER ARMOURED UNITS, TOOK PART IN AN IMPRESSIVE PARADE PAST PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN'S DAIS.

    IN HIS SPEECH, THE PRESIDENT SAID THE PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN HAD PROVED "WITH THEIR BLOOD" THE TRUTH OF THE QUAID-I-AZAM PROCLAMATION IN 1947 THAT "PAKISTAN HAD COME TO STAY" HE SAID "...THE YEAR THAT HAS GONE BY PRESENTED TO OUR INTEGRITY AND SOVEREIGNTY A GREAT CHALLENGE TO WHICH THE WHOLE NATION OFFERED A MAGNIFICENT RESPONSE."
    PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN APPEALED FOR PEACE, BUT SAID THERE SHOULD BE NO LET-UP IN PAKISTAN'S DEFENCE BUILD-UP, DESPITE A SHORTAGE OF RESOURCES. HE SAID THE RIGHT OF SELF-DETERMINATION FOR THE PEOPLE OF KASHMIR "IS THE REAL SOURCE OF FRICTION BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN".
