  • Description

THE INDO-CHINESE LOOK DOMINATED A DISPLAY OF MEN'S FASHIONS WHICH OPENED IN COLOGNE, WEST GERMANY TODAY (THURSDAY). CASUAL INDIAN INFLUENCES AND MAO-TYPE JACKETS POINTED THE WAY TO MASCULINE FASHION TRENDS IN EUROPE FOR THE COMING SEASON.

MOST OF THE CLOTHES ARE THE WORK OF GERMAN DESIGNERS, BUT MANY HAVE COME FROM OTHER COUNTRIES IN EUROPE. THEY ALL CONFIRM THE TREND AWAY FROM THE SOMBRE, LACKLUSTRE LOOK OF THE PAST -- BROAD, BRIGHTLY COLOURED STRIPES AND EXTREME SHAPINGS POINTED THE WAY TO FASHION'S TOMORROW. MANY OUTFITS HAD MATCHING HATS, SHIRTS, TIES AND UMBRELLAS.

TRADITIONALLY STYLED JACKETS WERE WAISTED, WITH SLANTING POCKETS. OTHERS WERE CUT WITH HIGH ROUNDED COLLARS AND NO LAPELS -- HIGHLY REMINISCENT OF MAO-TSE TUNG AND THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION.

AND THERE WAS A HINT OF THE NOSTALGIC PAST, WITH A MILITARY-TYPE RAINCOAT CUT IN THE STYLE OF PRE-WAR GREAT BRITAIN. THE ENGLISH INFLUENCE WAS CARRIED ON IN AN OUTFIT INVOLVING DOUBLE-BREASTED JACKET AND BOWLER HAT.

NORWEGIAN DESIGNERS CONTRIBUTED THE ULTIMATE IN ELEGANT MORNING SUITS, ALTHOUGH THE TOP HAT HAD NOT BEEN ALTERED APPRECIABLY.

THERE ARE 600 EXHIBITORS FROM 19 COUNTRIES AT THE EXHIBITION.
