  • Description

In a joint Air Force - Army project, troops prepare a dirt runway to test a plastic covering for assault airlift airstrips at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The membrane is a coated nylon fabric, three-sixty-fourths of an inch thick, held in place by a special anchoring pins. The runway sides are packed for added holding strength. Maximum effort landing, take-off, and taxi tests were conducted by day and night with the membrane both wet and dry. The aircraft were at varying gross weights. While results have not yet been fully evaluated, this new material shows promise of being a practical all-weather landing zone surfacing.

This would further strengthen our Air Line of Communications by improving operating technique for forward area assault airstrips.
