    PRESIDENT NYERERE WAS SPEAKING YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AT THE TANGWANI PLAYING GROUNDS IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, AT THE END OF A WEEK OF FESTIVITIES THROUGHOUT TANZANIA.

    DURING THE SABA SABA FESTIVITIES, A CEREMONIAL UHURU (FREEDOM) TORCH WAS CARRIED THROUGHOUT THE MAINLAND OF TANZANIA AND ZANZIBAR. THE FLAME REPRESENTED THE SPIRIT OF NATIONAL UNITY IN TANZANIA.

    YESTERDAY, AFTER A PROCESSION OF DANCERS, BANDS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF MANY TANZANIAN ORGANISATIONS WOUND THROUGH DAR-ES-SALAAM, THE TORCH WAS CARRIED TO THE STADIUM BY A SOLDIER OF THE TANZANIAN ARMY.

    TANU MEMBERS, ARMY UNITS, A GUINEAN ARMY BALLET, POLICE BANDS AND A CONTINGENT FROM A SWEDISH SOCIALIST YOUTH MOVEMENT TOOK PART IN THE MARCH.

    IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT NYERERE PLEDGED HIS TANU GOVERNMENT TO CARRY ON THE FIGHT AGAINST COLONIALISM, AS WELL AS ITS CAMPAIGN TO END ALL EXPLOITATION WITHIN TANZANIAN SOCIETY.

    PRESIDENT NYERERE, WHO RETURNED RECENTLY FROM VISITS TO THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AND NORTH KOREA, MADE NO REFERENCE TO THE RECENT RESTORATION OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN, BROKEN OFF MORE THAN TWO YEARS AGO OVER BRITAIN'S RHODESIA POLICIES.
