  • Description

NEGROES IN ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA INTEGRATED SEVERAL MOTELS ON TUESDAY (7 JULY) THAT HAD BEEN THE SCENE OF BITTER RACIAL VIOLENCE. THE NEGROES ENTERED THE MOTELS, REGISTERED AND WERE ASSIGNED ROOMS. EARLIER, THE SAME MOTELS HAD SEEN NEGROES ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO EAT IN THE MOTEL RESTAURANTS, DRAGGED FROM THE MOTEL SWIMMING POOLS BY POLICEMEN, AND REFUSED ROOMS.

IN FLORIDA, REPRESENTATIVES OF VARIOUS CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS SPENT THE NIGHT IN PREVIOUSLY ALL-WHITE MOTELS WITHOUT INCIDENT.

IN WASHINGTON,THE PRESIDENT RECEIVED THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT IN A BRIEF CEREMONY AT THE WHITE HOUSE ROSE GARDEN. THE COMMITTEE IS CHARGED WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ENSURING THAT NEGROES ARE TREATED EQUALLY WITH WHITES IN GOVERNMENT AND GOVERNMENT-CONNECTED EMPLOYMENT.

THE NEW CIVIL RIGHTS BILL MAKES DISCRIMINATION IN PRIVATE EMPLOYMENT -- AS WELL AS GOVERNMENT CONNECTED, EMPLOYMENT -- UNLAWFUL AND SETS UP A FAIR EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES COMMISSION TO ENFORCE THE BAN. MR. JOHNSON COMMENTED THAT THE COMMITTEE'S WORK ON ENDING DISCRIMINATION IN PRIVATE BUSINESSES WORKING ON GOVERNMENT PROJECTS HAD DONE MUCH TO LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR THE "RESPONSIBLE, AND...PEACEFUL ACCEPTANCE OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964."
